"We may not be better off than we were with the old dam that was council-owned. Now that dam has not been yet commissioned. Council has high security licenses to use 16.4 gigalitres at Chaffey Dam, and 5.6 gigalitres at Dungowan Dam, to be used for the Tamworth supply.
JOURNALIST: I understand you’re visiting fire-affected communities later today. And as the Deputy Premier said we need to put things into perspective. COL MURRAY, MAYOR OF TAMWORTH REGIONAL COUNCIL: So on behalf of the community I represent today this is a massive milestone event to have the support of our federal government and our state government and I'd really like to acknowledge the leadership that I think will be refreshing right around our nation to see that we've got two governments here that are prepared to collaborate and work together on these these significantly needed major projects, water for our community has been a massive issue for quite a number of years and I would suggest that we would maybe be one of the most water restricted cities in regional Australia over the last 10 or 15 years and it's a great problem to have because our community is growing and this announcement today I believe will halt the businesses that have looked at investing in Tamworth and have gone away to invest elsewhere because the water security just hasn't been here. List of qualified backflow service providers, Plumber’s application for listing on Council’s qualified backflow service providers register, Peel River / Nundle Bore / Crawney Road Bore, The Paradise Drift Wells (emergency only). So in this region, that was almost 30 years ago.
But now that we've secured that, we’re at the next stage and whilst we do have challenges across the state these dams now take our focus. The Tamworth region enjoys a clean, safe and healthy water supply that is drawn from three dams, five rivers and a series of local bores.
Absolutely and with the combination of the fast-tracking from a planning perspective but also from a financial perspective.
Aren’t we Michael? And so it's great to be here today. PRIME MINISTER: Happy to take some questions on these projects and the issues that surround them and them when we can move to other matters federal and state and we deal with those in turn. So at least half of that will come from the State Government. Ms Cadell said the prospect of more rain in August makes the relaxation of restrictions more likely. Of course they are. THE construction of the new $480 million Dungowan Dam is a step closer after the government announced part one of the funding to kickstart the pre-construction works. "The purpose of the dam was always water security for Tamworth, and if there's going to be very little water available for the city there's going to be a huge question over who's made the decision to spend $500 million on bugger all," Mr Murray said.
Here of course at Dungowan, a brand new dam. JOURNALIST: What will this do for the spirits of people in Tamworth. PRIME MINISTER: Thanks Gladys. JOURNALIST: Sounds like NSW is the golden child at the moment? The council is currently not sourcing water from Chaffey Dam, instead using the region's secondary water storage at Dungowan Dam. Overnight, it's been building for a number of years.
But Independent MP Justin Field said the business case for each dam should be released before approvals were granted. I mean just last year alone more than $300 million dollars went into additional supports into these communities, that's going to happen again this year, and it's going to happen again next year.
PRIME MINISTER: Well a couple of points last year, the year just finished $165 million dollars was spent on farm household allowance and we have made two big changes to the Farm Household Allowance. "We are disadvantaging future generations if we don't learn our lesson in this drought and build more dams now. We're now getting on with the job of building major dams and we'll have shovels in the ground, excavators on site in the next few months. But you've also got to look to the future. THE HON. THE HON. "Estimates of the practical benefits and additional availability of water for the community of Tamworth will be clearer once the final business case is complete in 2021.". And so we worked up a list and then we put two of these two projects here at the top of that list and that's why we're pleased to stand shoulder to shoulder with the state government who at the end of the day, state governments are the ones who've got to dig the holes and dig them deeper and build the pipeline and do all of these things. Dungowan Dam is a supplementary source with a capacity of 6.3 gigalitres. And our job is to say to them we don't forget about you once the fires go out. Water being released down the spillway at Wyangala Dam in 2016. would cause significant damage to downstream ecosystems and wetlands. A cost-benefit analysis would form a fundamental part of those cases. This will be a new dam downstream three kilometres.

The dam funding came after a sustained 'Water Pressure' campaign by Leader, revealing the critical water shortages and supplies across the Tamworth region. Chaffey Dam is Tamworth’s primary water source with a capacity of 100 gigalitres. How would you rate your awareness of the proposed New Dungowan Dam and Pipeline Project? A team from the DPI research farm at Trenayre, Grafton are trialling short season Burrunjuck variety to make better use of the North Coast's spring growing season. Water restrictions would be relaxed to level four if Chaffey Dam hits 25 per cent capacity.
PRIME MINISTER: Well the first thing is to put our arms out and our arms around people in a time of very deep distress, the loss of life is just devastating and heartbreaking, and the loss of property as well has been quite significant in these fires. So with that thank you again I'm going to hand over the DPM to talk more specifically about our involvement. Below is a list of potential impacts (positive and negative) that are commonly associated with dam projects. Scientists have told the government that the raising of the Wyangala Dam wall and a separate proposal to replace the weir on the Macquarie River would cause significant damage to downstream ecosystems and wetlands. "The taxpayer is being expected to cough up billions of dollars for new fast-tracked dams under the banner of town water security but it looks like the big beneficiaries are going to be the industrial and agricultural water users," Mr Field said.
