He was appointed as the Professor of Poetry at the University of Oxford in 1989. In 1965, he married Marie Devlin, a fellow writer who would figure prominently in Heaney's work. This gave him a chance to practice both modern and mythical concerns. At St. Columb’s College, Heaney was taught Latin and Irish, and these languages, together with the Anglo-Saxon which he would study while a student of Queen’s University, Belfast, were determining factors in many of the developments and retrenchments which have marked his progress as a poet. When he was twelve years of age, Seamus Heaney won a scholarship to St. Columb’s College, a Catholic boarding school situated in the city of Derry, forty miles away from the home farm, and this first departure from Mossbawn was the decisive one. Seamus Heaney was famously known as an Irish man and notably the most influential and remarkable English-language poet in the field of literature. He was the eldest of nine children born to Patrick Heaney, a cattle farmer, and Margaret McCann, and grew up on the family farm of Mossbawn. Most of his poetry is based on the tradition and events of Northern Ireland, to which he has been a witness since his childhood.
Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw wrote more than 60 plays during his lifetime and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1925.
