After Robin Coste Lewis incurred brain damage from falling through a hole in the floor of a San Francisco restaurant, it took her a year just to re-learn the alphabet. Poems like Kenneth Koch’s poem “Locks” which consists of several pages listing types of locks, seem to have been the formal inspiration for much of Voyage of the Sable Venus. Robin Coste Lewis also makes use of another “New York School staple: the list or catalogue poem” (Lehman 225).

The title poem unites art history with the history of slavery and racism. With the focus and the unpredictability of a veteran improviser, he dances his way through the music of the late Tommy Potts, a sagelike fiddler whose sole studio album, “The Liffey Banks,” extended the idea of what traditional Irish music could be.
