Jesse Novak is the composer of the critically acclaimed Netflix animated comedy Bojack Horseman as well as The Mindy Project and the upcoming Netflix show The Babysitters Club. It’s a little challenging compared to being in a room with somebody, because you don’t get to meet them and make eye contact. The director of the pilot really liked what I was doing to the point where I ended up getting hired for the series, which I don’t think was anybody’s plan at first.
And I didn’t see myself wanting to do that. For example, it must have been fun doing your own take on the music for the kind of cheesy wholesome sitcoms you grew up watching with Horsin’ Around? People online were wondering if it was a real song from the ’40s, but it’s a song you wrote that’s perfect for that time period.
I guess I’m kind of trying to channel some—again, I’ve only named one name and I won’t name any more. But I really am trying to make it generic in the sense that I’m trying to borrow just enough from one source so that I can borrow from another source and another source, so that it doesn’t sound too much like any one song, but because I really do want to convey the sense of that entire year of pop styles.

The underwater episode, of course, presented its own set of challenges.

I think the graphic designers who did the fake posters for the show were on the same wavelength as me.
It’s collaborative, but I need to make sure that I keep things consistent to some degree, so that the universe feels cohesive.
It’s somewhere between “That’s What Friends Are For” and something by Boyz II Men, but with a little bit more of a power ballad feel.
JN: It was another late-night request—another late addition to the episode. You were just doing comedy.
Entertainment Tonight BoJack Horseman is a difficult show to describe on many fronts, not the least of which is because it’s an animated comedy about a universe filled with anthropomorphic animals alongside humans that deals with tough subjects like substance abuse and depression. He started out composing for TV on The Mindy Project (starring Mindy Kaling, the close friend of his brother B.J.) "I wanted it to feel like the show and yet feel different, which I think is exactly what the episode is," says Novak. Editing the vocals together was the most interesting part.
I knew the tone of the episode, too. That’s just the tip of the iceberg on the score front.

I guess the only other thing I would ask: When you look back on these past six years — seven years almost — what are some favorite memories from working on BoJack? Jeff Richmond’s music is so light and so playful and just sounds so classic — like you can’t even believe that it’s being written in a contemporary way, because it just makes everything feel like it’s just this comedy that’s always existed. Were you and series creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg usually on the same page when it came to the music? I’m just doing my thing at the moment, listening to music and playing around, like I have done my whole life. At the beginning of a show everything tends to be more tightly controlled.
Generic ’90s grunge song—I feel like it writes itself. They still kind of are. Oh yeah, it’s kind of wild the depth and breadth of music those cartoons had. I think so.

Despite those topics, the show somehow manages to be very, very funny as it follows the misadventures of its title character, a star on the popular ’90s TV show Horsin’ Around, who now tries to carve out fulfilling relationships in Hollywood (sorry, Hollywoo) after a lifetime of dysfunctional interactions and failed friendships. I wanted to try and give it a really different flavor.
I’m always trying to think of a new way to cover, say, a montage to keep things moving at a certain pace. Jesse Novak: I had done tons of media before, but I hadn’t done a 20-minute show before.
What I thought was a placeholder song, everybody really ended up liking it like that, and I never gave it the real pop energy treatment and I kept it a little sentimental.".

"I love an opportunity to put in a song that actually becomes a gag or part of the show, even if it's small," says Novak, who has been friends with the show's creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg since college. I think from the first time I ever was recording music, even for fun, I wanted to do jokes and make people laugh — do funny edits of songs or use funny sound effects to create a scene.

I think I eventually found the right quality and made it funny. So we had demos going in—that’s what we usually do.

I kept getting these comments about that and people would think, how do you explain what underwater music sounds like? He stands at the intersection of classic and modern technique. When a show ends and it feels really premature, that’s jarring.
They allowed for more time in the production for me to write the score. He’s walking the streets, and there was a note about—because I made a score that was a little bit sleepy and dreamy and it didn’t quite match all the action. Can’t go wrong with Alicia Silverstone heading a project. I have a show coming out on Netflix in March called The Baby-Sitters Club, which was the last thing I worked on. It’s too complicated to try to write a subtle, mopey song and then try to get Will Arnett to sing it for a comedy sequence that’s not even about the song.

Those are two names that come to mind. Broadly, I would say to some degree I was still finding my footing in the very beginning. When I first heard on the inside that the show was in its final season — or I started to hear the rumors — I thought, OK I guess it’s about time.
But I would say that, if anything, I just feel flattered that people would take something I made and then use that as a springboard for some other art form, which is drawing the visuals and putting something on top of it, letting them help each other.
