If you want more gaming umph, well if the zen2 is as good as it has been hinted ie keeping up with the skylake u-arch in games I would change the zen+ cpu in a heartbeat. For me, yes. I am building a new desktop setup. Request. I will be jumping to the 3800X as soon as possible but not before I see the benchmarks from multiple sources. I currently have some spare cash and was thinking of upgrading my 2700x to a 3950x. Wait for the benchmarks in the apps/games you use and then decide. If you're asking, chances are the answer is wait.

Personally I built my 2700X system in November 2018 for the sole reason of upgrading to Zen2.
Overall, nothing exciting but AMD promises these new XT CPUs will be able to maintain their boost clocks more consistently than the outgoing Zen 2 generation. That's true for now, and for the foreseeable future. If OP already own the motherboard, the difference when considering a 65w CPU, even if overclocked, would be so insignificant I'd first encourage OP too upgrade to the 3800x over replacing the motherboard. I mean I got rid of my 2700 because it was not that much faster than my old i7 3770k in games and slower than my i7 6700(non-k) with on wihout oc. I upgraded to a 3700x couple months ago from a 2600k and did 7 years of development on the 2600k in visual studio and other tools. (Mainly for high demanding development tasks and some gaming.) IN MY OPINION, just get a 3700x or 3900x. CPUs will always get faster. share. Say not bad things about my 3950x. The AMD Ryzen 9 3900X is a monstrous CPU, boasting 12 cores in a small package with 24 threads at hand to handle any task you throw at it.
