This book is so much more than "just" wine, however...it's written by a journalist who was actually at the event that forms the centerpiece of the book, so it is very accessible with a personal touch. Maybe because the art-market is filled with investors. Paris is the main man in this story. Two of the major figures in this account are the artists Manet and Meissonier. All this history leads up to the famous tasting in 1976, when California wines beat out French wines in a blind taste test in Paris. It takes in Messioner adulation during his lifetime for his exquisite realism and detail and the rise impressionists who challenged the value of realism for a new aesthetic of light and color by less slavish attention to objectivity and more subjective play of light and color in composition. Three goddesses, Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite all claimed the apple should be for them. Meissonier was purged from the art history books, yet was the most celebrated artist during his 40 years of painting. This is one of my favorite books. Add to that the pleasure of sticking it to the snobby French wine testers. I really like this kind of book, but the last half reads too much like a history book. However, this extremely detailed info dump is only really necessary unless you are preparing to answer jeopardy questions about the topic. This excellent book brings to life Paris and the artists of Paris during the decade 1863-1874. The book is packed with details and facts but still reads like a novel as far as keeping me engrossed in the story. This is a fine social history about the development of French Impressionism. It was well written, fairly well illustrated (there is always the internet for looking up more of the paintings mentioned, but I hate getting up from my reading to do that), and the subject matter and people involved were fascinating to me. And I very much enjoyed the author going into detail about the effects of the results of the event. The book came out in 2005, but is mostly about the revolution of wine making in the mid 1970's. with that being said i really learned alot and i loved looking up the paintings and the last couple of chapters were educational as well. It was interesting to read about the different influences from other countries that helped in developing the California wines. Well, I tend to enjoy any book wine related, as the topic is one of the passions of my life, and further I'm pretty familiar with the tasting, back story and history. The book follows the events of 1863-the 1870's Paris and the Salon and the events of the time with Napoleon III and then into the Franco-Prussian war in the early 1870's, and how the events affected the artist’s lives. Mostly I find it interesting how Manet plugged along without any success like the other young Parisian artists who were trying to get their "modern" style of art recognized by the Salon. Also lots of time spent on rudimentary basics on how wine is made - again, nothing wrong with that, just that it was written for a very novice audience. The French wine world sounds like a very tradition bound, inbred business. It is a very detailed, in-depth look at the artists Manet and Meissonier, their work and how that work both exemplified and defied the artistic trends and political environment of 19th century Paris - the crucial time period that both shaped and changed the art world. The blind tasting was meant to be a bit of a tease, a lark. and visted the Mondavi, Sterling, Beringer and Christian Brothers wineries (amongst others). it was unnecessarily dense not due to its length or subject in particular, but due to the thorough details of everything. The author explores in tandem the life of a little-known artist nowadays Meissonier. disdaining fortunes of judgement of paris. George M. Taber, the only reporter present, recounts this seminal contest and its far-reaching effects. We see these. He was different as Manet was different.
