The Westminster Directory of Publick Worship has a significant section on the preaching of the Word. But it was thought more important that he know and love the Word than that he be “a regular guy.” Some years ago Time reported the results of a survey that showed that most Americans wanted a minister who was “open” and “affirming.” The Directory stresses something quite different: faithfulness to the Word. Still, preaching is God’s appointed means of communicating the Gospel. Do we today still believe that the preaching of the Gospel is the power of God unto salvation? Now then, let's look into this passage of Scripture and ask ourselves some very simple questions and try to find some answers. It begins by stressing the spiritual importance of preaching and repeating the words of Scripture that it is “the power of God unto salvation” (Romans 1:16). If you are a preacher, work on improving your preaching–it is a vitally important calling. The Directory underscores the importance of preaching by discussing the preparation of the preacher. Still, preaching is God’s appointed means of communicating the Gospel. One of the central acts of worship is hearing the Word preached. It must be valued by the Christian community as families value food.
Speaking, nonverbal communication like gusteres etc involves. It is the power of God unto salvation. Communication is sending and receiving accurate messages. Well, I trust that you get the idea. A neglected element of faithfulness today- often neglected by preachers and congregations- is time. The preacher must be mentally and spiritual prepared. Congregations must not just grudgingly grant that time, but must insist that that preacher take that time. By study and prayer he should seek the truth of the Lord in the Scriptures and prepare to preach it publicly to the people of God. The preaching office undergirds and nourishes all the work of the church and of Christians. Their preaching will suffer because their smaller-scale communication is weak. Preaching in that sense is unlike any other communication experience.
In this “Year of Communication” it should be of interest to note that contemporary church leaders and Bible scholars have already since long emphasized the importance of effective communication.
