The Rock ‘n’ Roll Island film, a museum and regular Eel Pie Club gigs at The Cabbage Patch pub in Twickenham are ensuring the continuing celebration of a music legacy that is closely intertwined with that of Ealing, Hanwell, Richmond and other outer London neighbourhoods. Starting as a Wednesday night trad jazz club, Eel Pie picked up on the R&B boom which had been started at the Ealing Club in March 1962 by Alexis Korner and Cyril Davies. It was Rod Stewart, who’d had “a couple of bevvies”. Eel pies have been described Ealing Club followers will recognize Don Craine of the Downliners Sect and members of The Others and Robert Hokum of the Ealing Blues Festival who also feature in the film. Steve Hackett remembered it as “foggy, misty, cold” – but that only added to the atmosphere. Those were the days when young women stayed home and did their hair, in preparation for a Saturday night out.

In the 1920s and 1930s, the Eel Pie Hotel was a genteel establishment, the place well-behaved couples went to ballroom dance. If you enjoy the eclectic there are plenty of things to amuse from naked mannequins, sculptures, and old boats. Eel Pie Island, “the big bang of rock music”, is now a townhouse development, and the music born there is celebrated in the Eel Pie Island Museum in Twickenham. Rock ‘n’ Roll Island included great interviews with figures such as Rod Stewart and Peter Frampton explaining how their careers began in music thanks to Eel Pie Island. The only place to hear black music in the 1950s and 1960s was on American Forces Radio, the records rare and available only on import from specialist stores.
