We barely saw any interaction with Rizella at all, and it was only ever through text, so to have this prelude focus on Arizal finding resolve for herself and then to take this swerve for a character we barely know, especially if this may end up being the end of the story entirely, is bit cheap. What we do have is these four parts, which were made specifically to both give us a taste for the show itself, as well as get feedback on what we would WANT to see in said show. It’s in that where I feel this prelude might have been better served with showing us four SEPARATE moments from Arizal’s life leading up to her becoming a Record Keeper (or Keeper, or RK, as apparently there are many ways to say this term) instead of four moments from the same day that is a foregone conclusion. The shorts is a prequel to an upcoming series. We’re not even at the first episode, so why would be doubt for a second that she was going on this path anyway? Not to mention that, similar to Nomad of Nowhere, the art style sometimes shakes between comedic and serious in a way that makes me a bit confused as to what tone I’m supposed to be feeling.It also gives me my first thought about what feedback to give when this prelude is over, which is that the vlog/found footage storytelling style should really only be a PART of the story, not its entirety. While we don’t know exactly what the future holds for Arizal either in or out of universe, we have some ways of tracking the progress of it towards a proper first season. On one hand, this is not really a finished product, so to judge it based on what is missing seems a bit cruel. And in a move surprising no one, Arizal still wants to be a Record Keeper. The other is to simply check in with the show’s creator, Yssa Badiola, through her social media, or just wait for some news in the upcoming RTX From Home. The way that being a Record Keeper is being described, I can see it being sort of like what a Traveler is shown to be in the lauded anime series “Kino’s Journey”, even though that’s not exactly a real occupation. Will we be able to jump into the show from the first episode (which seems like common sense if you ask me) without watching these shorts?
This is a bit of a similar trick to RWBY’s color coded trailers that preceded its show, or Gen:LOCK’s debriefings with Dr. Weller about the pilots prior to the show’s beginning.I’m not gonna lie, I’m pretty unsure what to think about this approach. Incidentally, “Record Keeper” was the original title for the series prior to being changed to its current name. I’m honestly kind of confused why the descriptions tried to imply there are actual stakes here when the whole point of this prelude is that the story hasn’t even started yet. The personal struggles regarding whatever has happened with Rizella, which we don’t get a clear answer on, can also be worth some exploration.But in regards to this prelude as a single piece that may end up being the only look at the show we ever know: I feel like a bit too much time was spent on Arizal in her room and the ending felt a bit cheap. We could have used the few minutes we had to see more of the area or learning more about what being a Record Keeper means, or even meeting her other friends properly other than a few off-screen cameos. The question that comes to mind for me then is “why AREN’T we starting at Episode 1?” What about these four prelude shorts couldn’t have been fitted into the actual first chapter of the series? Yes, Arizal is cute as hell and Christine Marie Cabanos does bring a unique performance to her character compared to her anime dubbing. Arizal reels from how unprepared she actually is to become a Record Keeper, but gets cheered up by some sudden encouragement from her friends. Next, she’ll interview a real Keeper.
Hopefully. We don’t currently have any new of the series going past this four part prelude, and one of the vlogs released along side it seems to confirm that things are up in the air currently on that, so whether or not we’ll see the continuation of this journey is unclear.
