Lenin’s response to the February Revolution flowed from the internationalist perspective for which he had fought throughout his political life, and especially in the aftermath of the August 1914 betrayal of the Second International, when the majority of its parties and leaders supported their own capitalist class in World War I. This perspective demanded, Lenin insisted, the establishment of a new, Third International, comprised only of parties committed to world socialist revolution. He decided to promote Bolshevism from neutral Sweden.
The demands of the working class and soldiers were reflected most clearly in the resolutions of Bolshevik-influenced sections of workers and the military, calling on the Soviets to take power into their hands. Some Russians even blamed Rasputin, the Tsarina’s confidant, for the misfortunes that had befallen their country. After three days of an intense train ride through Germany, the revolutionaries finally reached the Baltic Sea at Stralsund and the island of Rügen, to the port of Sassnitz, from where the party boarded a ferry that took them to Sweden. Already, restrictions have been lifted for political reasons: to hold a military parade marking Victory Day and then a nationwide vote to amend the constitution and allow Putin to run for reelection until 2036.
