Earlier in 1898, Behring and F. Wernicke had found that immunity to diphtheria could be produced by the injection into animals of diphtheria toxin neutralized by diphtheria antitoxin, and in 1907 Theobald Smith had suggested that such toxin-antitoxin mixtures might be used to immunize man against this disease.

Since the diphtheria treating serum was extracted from guinea pig and from the sheep, it is not sure whether there was enough serum during that time for medication.

At the International Tuberculosis Congress in 1905 he announced that he had discovered "a substance proceeding from the virus of tuberculosis."

In 1890 he published an article with Kitasato Shibasaburō reporting that they had developed "antitoxins" against both diphtheria and tetanus. He tried unsuccessfully to obtain a protective and therapeutic agent for humans. The two men developed a diphtheria serum by repeatedly injecting the deadly toxin into a horse. He also published two books on infectious diseases in the years 1894 and 1898 respectively.

In 1893, Emil became a professor.
He started studying iodoform and its derivatives for disinfection.

Son of Georg August* Behring and Augustine Behring

He was mainly a military doctor and then became Professor of Hygienics within the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Marburg (against the initial strenuous opposition of the faculty council), a position he would hold for the rest of his life.
Between the years 1883-87, he conducted further studies on the actions of iodoform and studied for the entrance examination of ‘Prussian Public Health Service’. To facilitate his work a commercial firm in which he had a financial interest, built for him well-equipped laboratories at Marburg and in 1914 he himself founded, also in Marburg, the Behringwerke for the manufacture of sera and vaccines and for experimental work on these.

They had seven children. Then one of Behring's teachers, recognizing great promise, arranged for his admission to the Army Medical College in Berlin, where he was able to obtain a free medical education in exchange for futuremilitary service. He was widely known as a "saviour of children," as diphtheria used to be a major cause of child death. That same year, he was given the title of professor. Starting from his observations on the action of iodoform, Behring tried to find whether a disinfection of the living organism might be obtained if animals were injected with material that had been treated with various disinfectants. Apart from performing his assigned duties in the military, he also contributed a significant portion of his time to research. He was then sent to Wohlau and Posen in Poland. He once had a fractured thigh which resulted in pseudarthrosis and this disease made Emil with limited mobility. Emil von Behring was one of the founders of the science of immunology. He was the eldest son of a schoolmaster from his second wife-the family had a total of 13 children. The most important ones being development of antitoxins to cure sepsis and diphtheria; both the diseases were cause of numerous deaths among the humans.

Emil Behring (1854-1917), the “saviour of children”, the “saviour of soldiers”, local politican, 1st Nobel Prize of Physiology or Medicine winner and nobleman (both since 1901), Geheimrat (since 1903) and successful businessman. His status was upgraded in the society. His body kept on losing its health and when Emil suffered from Pneumonia, his physical state was unable to handle the overall state and he died on March 31, 1917 in Marburg. ... The same year he was also awarded the title of Geheimrat(privy councillor) in Prussia.

With the success, Emil achieved with his work, his place of stay named Villa Behring gained social status and still exists today.

Emil Adolf von Behring was born on March 15, 1854, in Hansdorf, West Prussia(now Germany). It was thebacteriologist Paul Ehrlich, another of the talented associates in Koch's lab, who was chiefly responsible for standardizing the antitoxin, thus making it practical for widespread therapeutic use. August was a teacher by profession and Augustine was his wife from his second marriage.

In 1894, Behring accepted a position as professor at the University of Halle.A year later, he was named a professor and director of the Institute of Hygiene at the University of Marburg. From the year 1889, Emil started working on tuberculosis.

On March 15, 1854, german physiologist Emil von Behring was born. In December 1896, Behring married Else Spinola (a daughter of Bernhard Spinola, director of the "Charité" hospital in Berlin.

A chemical company preparing to undertake commercial production and marketing of the diphtheria serum offered a contract to both men, but von Behring maneuvered to claim all the considerable financial rewards for himself. Von Behring is considered the founder of the science of immunology. Between 1874 and 1878, he studied medicine at the Akademie für das militärärztliche Bildungswesen, Berlin. He also dedicated his later life in developing a cure for the respiratory disease, tuberculosis; an endeavour he remained unsuccessful in. He became famous for his works and in the year 1895 was made the official of the Legion of Honor. When in 1894, André Martin and Roux brought out the details about the immunization of the horses; Emil expanded his studies based on that.
