Registration starts at 6pm
Free and open to all, but booking is required via Eventbrite.
Artist David Birkin will be in conversation with Maya Foa, director of the human rights organisation Reprieve, and co-founder and filmmaker Paul Hamann, to discuss art, advocacy, and political responsibility. David will preview his short silent film Charade, made for Reprieve’s current campaign, which uses gesture to highlight government secrecy and censorship. He will also show his latest photographic work Midnight Blue — cyanotype prints exposed from negatives Hamann took at the Mississippi State Penitentiary in 1987. The discussion will extend to the visualisation of capital punishment in the US and the politics of aesthetics.
The discussion will be moderated by Max Houghton, Course Leader, MA Photojournalism and Documentary Photography.
