The Bucks are one of the 17 teams that is competing in the new NBA 2K League, a necessary decision in Feigin's mind. Peter: Thats great, thats one of the only times that questions been asked. It is so important that kind of at least in our infrastructure. Peter: Well, I think first of all, everything is like, you plan to be great. That is an interesting statement. My mother was one of the preeminent ad executives from Grey Advertising for 40 years. Youre physically building an arena, a district, a template for success. We're not only going to be public, we're going to privately help kind of move the cause and funding. And then I think the most incredible thing, which I can't see happening in a major metropolitan area again, is we were able to acquire 30 acres of contiguous land. Talk about the journey to the Bucks and how did that happen and then why Milwaukee? It's the same way she'll listen through what I'm going through. Youre going to have to work your butt off because its work. You cant imagine. But the honesty of saying you dont know all the answers and figuring out what the solutions are is probably like pretty powerful in the way things work. Let me just throw this out there. That was my dream of dreams when I was a kid: Oh, my God. Peter Feigin: Michael, like I said, anytime, anywhere. It's like how do we, between us, like as you know. We have resources, we back them up, whatever you need, it's part of it. It was, like you couldn't even, if you had a thousand scenarios, of what the last year could be for the Milwaukee Bucks and what you're kind of thinking about and dealing with, it's just been a pretty incredible ride and ton of emotion. You got into really like, "How do we create resources for people to just talk about how they're feeling, about how they vent, about how do they get support for their lives?" Ill tell you how it I got the offer, the conversation and we play a pickup game of basketball every Saturday for 20 years with the same guys. I just wanted to get it done and kind of move the needle and kind of. Got it. We were either 29th or 30th in a league of 30 teams, we were in a 25-year-old arena, that part of this was how do we get a new arena built? Peter, talk a little bit about the future. Whether it was in sports or somewhere else Id probably look to lead an opportunity for a turnaround or a startup. The arena is Feigin's baby, and he's almost ready to show it off, as doors will open next season. John: Thats awesome. You miss falling on the ground, Dan Feigin said. And we thought we were in a place and we're nowhere close to how good we can be or how we can use this NBA platform and our players and our organization to help change the community, to help change our performance as a team, and to be better citizens. 1 team in the league, to be the brand representation.' John: How about the issue of when people put on those special glasses now, and they can watch a game in 3D or whatIm so out of it a little bit, Peter, technologically speaking, but the young people are talking about the future of watching sports is were going to be able to, is going to be eventually cameras court side, and were going to be able to watch it and feel like were sitting court side and youre at a bucks game. We want to win. So, these guys are thrown into a world where they're responsible for everything, they assume they know everything, and what their experience is. How do we change the model, and really put new metrics out there, for us to get it? Some people dont like to hear that anymore. But the Bucks' toughest hit came off the court. Peter Feigin: So, my job is pretty simple, like how do I build the trust with them? We had this, I think it was an intern, said to us like, Well, we should, have you read about ghost kitchens? Of course were sitting there going like, eh, kind of like, we dont know what the hell youre talking about. Michael Red: It's been wonderful to watch. In September 2013, then-deputy commissioner Adam Silver announced that Bradley Center, the team's home since 1988, was unfit for an NBA team. Then, I would literally leech myself. Peter: Married. I mean, nobody understands like players have a handful of days off the entire season. And I think he's going to sell the team. But talk about that nuance and being in leaders on the social injustice play. Here in a million person city and your ability to affect change, your platform, your ability to really make a difference is so incredible. But he worries about the physical effects of another extended layoff. You start and now talk about the major, like you said, you got a great human capital person, you got a great CFO. I just think were just laughing that its so great to have, we have an ice cream Wednesday where its supposed to be Tuesdays, but we incentivize to ride his ice cream truck around the floor and around the facility to do a break. I do." John: Just for a fun look, for our listeners sake. Like you said at the top of the show, very few human beings even get to be in this position in any professional sports level. He continues to build civic and business relationships around town through face-to-face interaction. Peter Feigin: And how we almost flaunt it in a good way and it's kind of easy. Peter: The ice cream truck. But then theres, in this group weve got 300 full-time people and 250 of them are involved in volunteering. Peter: its not the biggest, but it just talks about how special when you talk about in a small market, and we try to coalesce with the Brewers and the Packers as much as we can to be like the strength of these three pro teams and their players and their coaches and our coaches and GM spend a lot of time with the coaches and GMs at the Packers, which is just great. "You will be in a business meeting on Monday with one of the 300-500 business executives in the town and you will see them some place later that week or the week after, unlike in New York City," he says. Peter Feigin: And I think I kind of have this delusion that there's nothing that I can be a part of, that we can't accomplish. And you do it, for us, kind of my job was to be that rock and support and think about if you told me that 50% of my time would be spent on making sure everybody is okay. Peter: Then I think youre, listen, viewer consumption, what youre talking about is whether you put on an Oculus or whether youve got five screens going up, people are now watching short form video in five to 20 second increments to absorb a game. And the task at hand here is like the more successful we are on the court, the more successful we are on the business, the more opportunity we will have to do other things. I think to be successful here and take it from a very fast talking, sometimes lazy speaking New Yorker, who swears too much and does everything. Peter Feigin: So, we saw this as the opportunity of, "Oh my goodness. All of a sudden, 12 months ago, that went upside down, and with Giannis, it literally went international, national, regional, local, which is a great turnaround for us.". We closed our restaurants down. Whether it's police reform, whether it's incarceration, whether it's education, whether it's food desert. Michael Red: Were you always a risk taker or was that cultivated in your household or where did that risk taking ability come from? Thats a stain on your career, Dan Feigin said. And that's what we try to do. I got to talk about the journey to the Bucks though. Peter: Well, my dad was at Brooklynite so we were Mets and Jets. I think if you took me at this point in my life and where I am and. I suggested a lot of people who would be great presidents, and lo and behold, none of them worked out to do it, so I think they had to default to me to run the company.". Peter: is youve got to have so many opportunities and different variations to really, to really acquire different types of fans. We had a, if you remember, we had a COVID extended season. Peter: Yeah. Weve had Giannis invest in the brewers, which is like. Here is your example of everything you read everything you hear, everything he does is true. And Giannis knows whether we're talking about a big deal, whether we're talking about marketing, he knows those socks like he's good with, he owns me for a month now, he owns me. Its really important and youve got to take a real responsibility. Peter: Well, I made one of the biggest mistakes ever to begin with. It's truly like a restart. And that's kind of the way I think about everything. Because I talked with the Lakers guys, I talked with the Boston guys on what they had, did. That the only option we really had was to build grassroots and build relationships and take time across the entire community. As Feigin hones the Bucks' in-arena and digital strategy, The Giannis Effect is the guide. My wife and I have known each other since high school. So, of course, he's just had enough. Before we get talking about all the amazing things you've done in basketball, and just coming off amazing championship. But boy, if I could have mastered that a little bit earlier that that'd be one of the things I would do. I guarantee you'll find motivation and guidance from this remarkable man. And I don't know how many people know this, towards the end of his life, he really kind of did exhibitions, talks, and meetings literally until the day he almost died and traveled the country and the world as really kind of an incredible role model with an incredible story. Then you talk about what your leadership is and what your purse is so it all starts and ends with Giannis. Even though all of us who were so engaged into, nothing compared to what that value was, what that emotion was too. John: Its fascinating you say that. He's the president of the Milwaukee Bucks and he's a native New Yorker. How does that boat go? Peter: Well, its having like Ive always said, people talk about their personal board of directors and what that is and I had the advantage and still have the advantage of my mother being the best consultant you could possibly have. We've developed about 75% of it and people are living here, working here, and playing. How do you end up managing the importance of numbers and capital. Theres some other attributes, but just take those three is like your best, which, whether youre on basketball or the business side, you die for. Peter Feigin: So, I mean, this is talk about, "You never know what's going to happen and where." Talk about that process. How do we make this more than equal?" And I think the only thing anybody can control is their own effort and kind of their own dreams and where they want to go. Peter Feigin. Theyre going to look at that ring forever and remember that. That's actually a step up from the orange vests and hard hats he's been wearing in Milwaukee, constantly checking on the construction of the Wisconsin Entertainment and Sports Center, the non-branded name of the arena. You end up with a Jew holiday, who is this incredible, understated, all star. Where does it sit? I really think its kind of a cycle of selflessness and kind of best practices. How did you put the stadium deal together? "We had to build a new arena or we were going to move the team. It was like kind of so much fun and learning so much and kind of being on teams with really diverse people all around the league and around different teams. He thinks hes going to sell the team. Low and behold 24 hours, called him back and I said, oh, hes going to sell the team. And lo and behold, kind of five, six years later, we've kind of accelerated it. Its certainly an example of how do you keep the entrepreneurial spirit in an organization and what better way to do it with chicken, and its great chicken. In many ways, you were doing a startup when you came to Milwaukee with your partners. You buy the Bucks, you help with that whole negotiation and you were living in New York, so you were married already and you decided. We heard it straight from. Just what you said is like were always coming in this balance of how do we, we want Giannis to represent the Bucks brand. Our owners, when you talk about, our active operating board of governors, youve got guys like Mark Lazari who kind of in avenue capital and ran the distressed debt world. Talk about that balance between what you do with Milwaukee and obviously, with your family, right? Now, you had private equity partners. And Khris parks in a handicap space, because five minutes he's in. Whos got next? Lee said. We were sitting brainstorming like, how do we keep people employed? His company, Fortress Investment Group, also owns the eSports team FlyQuest. Peter Feigin: Yeah. It found him. Peter Feigin: This is where I want to be. During a media car wash in NYC in December, Feigin opts for a sweater, not a suit and tie. Well, that's you. Here's my conversation with Peter Feigin. I would say again, from our owners, from day one, they understood that from how are we stewards of the brand of the Bucks and how are we examples in the community? And kudos to you guys for being cognizant of that. Its hundreds of rings. And I really do think like so powerful and so great, because it really accelerated the chipping away of this systematic racism, if nothing else, brought it to the forefront and the top of discussion in mind. Heading into his ninth year as President of the Milwaukee Bucks, and fifth year as President of the world-class Fiserv Forum, Peter Feigin brings more than two decades of dynamic corporate leadership to Milwaukees sports and entertainment scene. I wander around the house, Feigin said in a recent telephone interview. His brother and Lee were just as excited. My father happened to pass away probably within a couple months and very close with Mark and Wes, who basically at that time said, Well, you now have to really consider this and do this. And at the time, I always say, I was their last hope because of the timing of the acquisition. Their experience is basketball. John: Talk about and want you to share a couple of thoughts about Warren Buffett and that whole deal. And like, "Hey, you got to hear my idea," or something. Thats just my view, Lasry said. Peter: Yeah, so I think its here and I think its all about the customization, right. I think that's something that you work with every day. Peter Feigin: No. Antetokounmpo signed a four-year, $100 million extension in September 2016 (right before his first All-Star season) that will keep him under contract in Milwaukee through 2020-21. "Peter has completely re-imagined the Milwaukee Bucks business operation and grown in sales, ticket revenue, retail and global recognition which is very important," Colbert explained. Thats.
