Although it was a close race, the winner was his Mystery/Ebony bridge. One of my favorite things about the bridge is how light weight they are. He graciously agreed (Id love to be a Fossil). I have a Deering Deluxe and, as with almost all banjos I have played, it needs a compensated bridge to be accurate over the whole fretboard. The midrange has regained its prevalence to reproduce an overall rich sound. But sound is what really matters. Get one - you'll like it. The raised 5th string feels very natural to my LARGE hands. Although, others may perceive a minor reduction in volume, I believe this is due to the banjo being less 'harsh'. My Stealth now projects and the single string work I like to do sounds much better and the sustain I get for slow things is very much improved now. The notes seem clearer on the low end than before. Davis is a great craftsman and can make a bridge out of a wide selection of woods and at any height or spacing you want. Very balanced with just the right amount of sustain and good pop. Now , when Virgil sent me the Frog Bridge , he also generously sent a European Beech bridge that he made and sent me to try. For my Goodtime Crow banjo, this is my second Tim Purcell banjo bridge that I have ordered from Tim after having such excellent results with the .656 bridge that he crafted for my Classic Goodtime scooped neck banjo. The idea took root and began to grow. We split up in our mid-twenties and went our separate ways but always remained friends. I end up get a bridge with slightly wider than Crowe spacing in 9/16th height to raise the action of the banjo. This has really increased the up-the-neck power in my banjo, since the strings touch the whole depth of the slot. I had to get a 2.09 gram and a 2.2 gram for my 2 banjos because all banjos are not the same.. A thing of beauty. I messed with the head tension a bit (less) and things only got better. I am always looking for positive changes in the tonality spectrum. By bass, I don't mean mellow or plucky. I can however say that whenever I changed strings with the Grover I was able to set the 2 outside strings bang on and the inside strings were what they were and that wasnt always very close to being accurate. I also own a standard old maple Kat Eyz and it's great one too, but the McCormick spice factory wood has a special flavor that I've started to prefer. The highs are sweeter and more vibrant. I am able to get a beautiful tone out of the instrument with the lightest touch and lowest volume, and it is as loud as you need it be as well. He made no claim or guarantee that the bridge would open up the sound, make the strings magically more playable, improve the intonation, and so on. I thought it sounded amazing, but then Gary showed me this new Red Maple bridge. Steve's $30 price tag is high when you're comparing a Davis bridge to some of the other handmade bridges available from other Hangout members. All of Bart's bridges are special. It has an ebony peg below the 3rd string slot and the ebony top is slightly arched to compensate for eventual sag due to to string pressure. Slots were just right (crowe spacing requested and done well). This translates into a lot of volume if you really dig in, should you ever need to peel the paint off your walls. Unlike a great many of the other makers' bridges out there, the Zimmerman bridge was perfect: every line, angle, and profile was super smooth and fine. I observed the following: I am very impressed with the product and with Dave. Many of the other bridges I've tried lost some of their pleasant, musical nature when trying to deliver more bass tones. I received my bridge and within 10 minutes had it installed. You really got to try this bridge. Got to be the best bridge I've ever owned.
